Duncan, I fear you’re right. PS has been imprudent from the beginning, and it’s now being pig-headedly imprudent. Based partly on this article, somebody has lodged a formal complaint against me to my bishop, who has called me in to give an account of myself. I reached the same conclusions about Project Spire long ago, and earlier this year I put a motion to my local PCC that we write to the latest Archbishop of Canterbury requesting that Spire be paused, pending proper consultation with The Parishes. Such was Sarah Mullaly’s concern for the Church at Parish level, that first her gatekeeper refused to let her see the letter, and when pressed, she got one of the Spire team to answer it. Of course it just repeated the party line and refused to consider reviewing the decision.
From my experience as a volunteer Business Advisor to the Prince’s Trust For Business, I predict that Project Spire will end in financial failure and scandal. If enterprises can not attract investment commercially, there is a high chance that they will fail. Where this happens, the hoped for social outcome is rarely fulfilled. Where there is easy money available, scandal often follows. And when quangos are dealing with the Caribbean, I feel sure that there will be lots of research trips to the Caribbean needed during the winter months.
